THE STORY
In 2020, Bob Dylan had scheduled two tours that would take him across the Pacific and back, from Tokyo to Los Angeles to Essex Junction and everywhere in between. Dylan had been on a hot streak after a critically acclaimed Fall tour where his voice sounded like he'd shed 15 years and the rearrangements he'd become infamous for were being touted as the definitive versions by his dedicated acolytes.
That Spring, a global pandemic threw the world into chaos we hadn't known in our lifetimes and Dylan was forced to cancel the remainder of his 2020 schedule. In lieu of performing live, Dylan surprised and delighted by releasing an unexpected album of original songs for the first time in almost a decade. Rough & Rowdy Ways was an astounding achievement for any artist, let alone one that was inching toward 80.
We'll never know if those songs would have debuted during those shows, or if Dylan would be Dylan and refuse to play them at all, knowing that fans were waiting with baited breath for the first chords of "I Contain Multitudes" or "Goodbye Jimmy Reed". I've often imagined that tour, and though we've been treated to another 5 years of Bob on the road, I wonder if those shows exist somewhere in the ether.
